The Environmental Defender’s Office of Northern Queensland (EDO-NQ) is a non-profit, non-government community legal centre specializing in public interest environmental law. We provide advice to members of the public about environmental law issues.
Our web site has loads of information about our work and services, and environmental law in Queensland. In particular it contains fact sheets that summarise planning laws in Queensland, explain about the regulation of World Heritages areas in North Queensland, and a raft of other useful information.
The EDO-NQ is running some interesting test cases about environmental law, in particular about climate change, a huge issue for this special region. Find out about the interesting casework we are running in our regular bulletins and alerts .
If you would like to support the EDO-NQ, and in particular our test cases, we’d encourage you to become a member or volunteer .
Volunteers
As the EDO-NQ has limited funding, we rely on volunteers to assist us with our work. The volunteer program also provide volunteers with opportunities to gain experience in the area of public interest environmental law and to improve their skills. Our volunteers are highly valued and assist with the following:
Volunteers who are admitted to practice as solicitors and who are available to work during office hours, can register to provide legal advice and assistance, under the supervision of the EDO-NQ principal solicitor. Volunteers admitted to practice may also wish to provide research assistance to solicitors to assist with staff development or responses to law reform proposals or to assist with community education projects.
Other volunteers holding law or science degrees can assist with research, either during or outside office hours. This research will usually be directed towards assisting solicitors with the provision of advice to clients, developing law or policy reform proposals, or developing and updating community legal education materials."
Students are also welcome at the EDO-NQ. Law and science students may be able to provide research assistance, including assistance with developing community education materials. Volunteers are needed to answer the phones and undertake other administrative tasks.
Membership of EDO-NQ will allow you to keep up to date on the latest public interest environmental legal issues in Queensland. You will receive our monthly bulletin, regular newsletters, access to our library and invitations to our functions and seminars. You are also entitled to vote at annual general meetings and nominate for the EDO-NQ management committee.
Your membership subscription and donations will also help the EDO provide its legal services; including providing representation of clients in Courts and Tribunals, for which no Commonwealth Government funding is available.
